Our Story

A steady hand for complex infrastructure.

Infrastructure projects succeed when technical decisions are made with discipline, transparency, and a clear understanding of risk.

For more than three decades, the partners at UEG have helped agencies, municipalities, and private owners move projects from early planning through delivery — with confidence.

We built UEG because we kept seeing the same problem: clients engaging large firms and getting junior staff. Senior engineers too busy selling the next project to deliver on the current one. Communication filtered through layers of management. Costs inflated by overhead that adds nothing to the work.

UEG is the alternative. A federation of experienced senior engineers and specialist firms — assembled with precision for each engagement, coordinated by partners who are directly accountable for every outcome.

We measure success by outcomes: safer assets, clearer decisions, and projects delivered with fewer surprises.

Leadership Team

Greg Courtice, PhD., P.Eng

President & Senior Hydrotechnical Engineer

Greg is a Senior Water Resources Engineer with experience in river engineering, fluvial geomorphology, ecohydraulics, hydrology, hydrometric monitoring, and bioengineering. His experience includes field investigations, design of hydraulic structures, erosion protection, flood hazard assessments, and topographic surveying using RTK and drone technology.

Greg completed a PhD in Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan Campus, developing a framework for managing temporary suspended sediment releases from river construction to improve environmental and economic outcomes. He has published quantitative tools in high-impact scientific journals to evaluate aquatic ecosystem impacts from river construction projects. His work has been cited by Fisheries and Oceans Canada as part of their pathways of effects review in support of their fish and fish habitat protection program.

Gordon Chrystal, P.Eng

CEO & Senior Civil and Water Resource Engineer

Gordon is a senior civil engineer with broad experience in infrastructure and general civil engineering across Africa and Western Canada. His expertise spans water resources planning, earth dams and associated structures, roads and hydrotechnical structures, site-wide infrastructure and construction planning for mining and O&G facilities, and construction management of large civil infrastructure projects.

Gordon has worked in multiple roles across the engineering sector — as Owner’s Engineer, Consultant, Client, Contracts Manager, and Contractor — giving him an integrated understanding of capital and environmental constraints and their impact on project outcomes.

Gus Hunt, P.Eng

Chairman of the Board, Senior Civil and Environmental Engineer

Gus is a Senior Civil and Environmental Engineer and Project Manager with over 25 years of experience in design and on-site construction management. A graduate of the University of Guelph and Memorial University of Newfoundland, he has focused his career on projects that apply both his biology and engineering backgrounds — particularly in sensitive environments where minimizing impact is as important as delivering the structure.

Gus has been involved in the design and construction of habitat compensation systems in river and estuary environments and has completed numerous projects in remote locations with limited materials and equipment. He is a boots-on-the-ground engineer whose approach to design emphasizes sustainable constructability and the use of available, regionally appropriate materials.

UEG is fully supported internally by an experienced Operations Leader — ensuring our internal systems and processes are as strong as the work we deliver.

How We Work

Clear communication. Disciplined delivery.

We establish decision pathways early, document assumptions, and communicate proactively—so teams stay aligned from feasibility through construction. Our approach emphasizes constructability, standards compliance, and practical solutions that reduce risk while supporting sustainability and long-term asset performance.

We integrate earlyWe align with your team at the start — not after problems emerge.
We document decisionsClear records protect everyone and keep projects on track.
We communicate directlyOne partner. Reachable. Accountable. No layers.
We flag risk earlyProactive reviews before issues become change orders.
We respect your budgetValue-driven solutions — not complexity for its own sake.
We stay to the endWe don’t disappear after design. We support through delivery.
